Blak Markets at Bare Island, Bidjigal Country

Blak Markets returns home

Blak Markets Christmas celebrations on Bare Island La Perouse

Spend a day immersed in Aboriginal culture at a Market dedicated to Indigenous Creatives on an Island usually only open for tours as the Blak Markets festival returns to Bidjigal Country for its final instalment on Bare Island for the year on Sunday, December 3.

Thanks to First Hands Solution Corporation and Randwick City Council, you'll find a variety of handcrafted items from Indigenous artists, designers and small businesses alongside homemade baked goods and sausage sizzles showcasing Indigenous flavours and ingredients, and top-notch skincare products and native plants from IndigiGrow. Great for a christmas shop with 100 per cent of sales going directly to the maker.

The lively markets will take over the island from 10am until 3pm — officially kicking off at 11am with a traditional welcome by Aunty Barb Simms and a smoking ceremony from First Hands Solutions CEO Peter Cooley. There will be dance performances by Djiriba Waagura and singing by Marcus Corowa and you can opt to get hands-on by joining the free weaving workshop run by Malima throughout the day.

Access to Bare Island is usually restricted to tour groups, so this is also a special opportunity to wander around freely while supporting a great cause, shopping ethically and learning from Indigenous creators and sellers. Admission for adults sits at the low price of $2.50, and children under five can head along for free.

Upcoming Dates:

- Sunday 3 December

Time: 10.00am to 3.00pm

Location: Held quarterly at Bare Island, Bidjigal Country, La Perouse, in Sydney’s southeast.

Entry: $2.50 for adults and free for children under five.

“The Blak Markets allow Sydneysiders to shop locally and support a good cause, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going back to Indigenous stallholders,”

- Peter Cooley, CEO of First Hand Solutions.

“There is nothing quite like shopping at the Blak Markets. Not only do you get to see the art and craft close up, but you get to hear the story behind it from the artist who created it. There is also a whole festival program that runs alongside the marketplace, including a Welcome to Country, smoking ceremony, song, dance and weaving workshops, just to name a few,” Peter added.

This Blak Markets features stallholders selling a variety of art, homewares, jewellery, fashion, children’s clothing, textiles, woodwork, woven goods, plants and bushfoods. You can expect to see and taste homemade baked goods created with Indigenous bush tucker and spices, source quality Indigenous skincare products and buy native plants for the garden from IndigiGrow.
